Learn English
While London welcomes newcomers who do not speak English as a first language, you will need to learn English to fully enjoy your new community, workplace and school. Several locations in London and Middlesex County offer part-time, full-time, evening or Saturday classes to improve your English. Most classes run for six weeks. New classes are always beginning.
Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC)
Free classes are open to newcomers 17 years or older. Contact
the
LINC Assessment Centre at the London Cross Cultural Learner Centre to determine your language level. Licensed child care is available at or near some LINC sites. Students may be eligible for free child care or transportation.
English as a Second Language (ESL) for Adults
Classes are open to people 18 years of age or older whose first language is not English or French. Tourists may also attend classes for a fee.
You will need to take the Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLBPT) before you can start ESL classes. This test evaluates four language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking in order to place students in a program suitable to their abilities, interests and needs.
ESL for Children
Free classes for children are available in Ontario public schools. Contact the school in your area for more information.
