Health Care
Most Canadians have family doctors who are usually the first to diagnose and treat medical problems. Family doctors are part of a comprehensive universal public health care system that provides necessary medical services. This system also includes hospitals, clinics and research institutes.
To receive universal health care, you need to apply for an Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) card, or health card, as soon as you arrive. Universal health care includes visits to a family doctor and specialists. Other services such as dental care, eye care, podiatrists and some physiotherapy are not provided for free. There is a three-month waiting period for coverage, so it is a good idea to purchase health insurance while you are waiting.
Newcomers may have difficulty finding a doctor. The Find a Family Doctor service provided by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario is a good place to start.
Walk-in medical clinics and the Middlesex-London Health Unit can help you with treatment and information while you're waiting to get a family doctor. Walk-in medical clinics provide medical care for people who do not have a family doctor. You don't need to make an appointment, but it's a good idea to call before visiting. The Middlesex-London Health Unit provides excellent information on general health, parenting courses, clinic hours and emergency issues. They also provide some treatment for people who do not have a family doctor.
